Hemp 101
Read through our fun and easy to understand crashcourse on hemp.
What is Hemp?
Hemp, or cannabidiol for short, is the 2nd most found chemical compound found in the Cannabis sativa plant. It is a natural occurring substance similar to the 1st most found compound, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC produces the euphoric. “high”. Hemp, on the other hand, is non-psychoactive and does not produce a high..
What are Cannabinoids?
Cannabinoids are active compounds produced by the cannabis plant. THC and Hemp own the majority of the compounds produced by the cannabis plant.
Hemp and THC are not the only cannabinoids, though. There are over 113 different compounds that have been discovered.
Here are a few:
CBG
CBN
THCv
CBC
THCa
CBDa
More research is being done on these compounds but we expect great things to come from it!
Cannabinoids found in plants are consider to be Phytocannibinoids. Phytocannabinoids mimic the effects of the naturally occurring cannabinoids found in our body, endocannabinoids.
The Endocannabinoid System
The Endocannabinoid system was discovered in the 1990s while conducting research on THC. Scientists discovered that our bodies naturally produce compounds almost identical to cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids.
Much more research is needed, but it has been said that the ECS is in change regulating:
sleep
mood
appetite
memory
reproduction & fertility
The goal of the endocannabinoid system is to keep our bodies at homeostasis, or equilibrium. Experts have identified two crucial endocannabinoids so far:
anandamide (AEA)
2-arachidonoylglyerol (2-AG)
The two work to keep our bodies running as it should.
Broad vs. Full Spectrum
Broad Spectrum hemp products contain almost all the cannabinoids, except for THC.
Our Broad Spectrum products are created using the finest extraction methods to date, by removing the THC using CO2 and then recycling it again for the next group of harvested plants.
Full Spectrum hemp products contain many of the terpenes and other cannabinoids (up to .3% THC). One reason why people purchase Full is due to the entourage effect, which has been said to have better effects because of how the cannabinoids react to one another.
Hemp Isolate is considered the purest form of hemp. It contains 99% hemp and has all other active compounds removed during the extraction method. Isolate resembles fine white powder, similar to how protein powder looks, or large crystals.
Depending on your individual preferences, drug testing, or other circumstances can determine whether to not your decide to purchase Broad Spectrum, Full Spectrum, or Isolate.
A Few Tips for Buying Hemp
1) Make sure the products you buy have a QR code to access the lab test.
The hemp industry is still relatively new, which means it will attract people who want make a quick buck off of your curiosity. Some companies claim they have a high dosage of hemp in their products, unfortunately they lie. Sometimes their products still contain heavy metals and other chemicals.
2) Take your hemp consistently
When you’re consistent with taking hemp daily, it helps the body to maintain a continuous amount of hemp in the body. This, in turn, assists to promote a healthy endocannabinoid system—the network of receptors responsible for internally regulating the body and keeping it stable.
Cannabinoid Receptors
Now that we know about endocannabinoids we can better understand endocannabinoids receptors. The human body has 2 endocannabinoid receptors:
CB1 & CB2
When endocannabinoids are produced they bind to the receptors to assist in returning to homeostasis.
CB1 receptors are located in the brain, and spinal cord. Following this, many believe that is why endocannabinoids may influence functions such as memory processing, pain regulation and motor control
CB2 receptors have been found mostly on immune cells, which circulate throughout the body and brain.
